Week Commencing 16th April
From being introduced to this topic I have outlined some targets I want to achieve throughout; I'd like to contribute constructively to this performance by inputting ideas and provide alternative options when faced with problems. I'd like to ensure I manage all my written work effectively and I'd like to experiment with my strengths as an actor by developing a strong role and pushing my limits within performing.
Tuesday was a very productive day for me as I expanded my knowledge as an actor through the workshops on Proxemics understanding of levels and learning about staging and directing. After devising a small piece (The tree little pigs) I have workshops this piece and developed it by looking into everything we have learnt, it quickly became apparent to me that the wolf (Dan) had a higher status to the pigs and therefore should be stood taller which would demonstrate his authority within the scene. I have had previous knowledge in Proxemics, however it was interesting to experiment with this in a workshop because I broadened my knowledge in the effects it has with and without the proper use of proxemics, I feel I took a lot form these workshops and would like to apply them to my character. I tested my knowledge in staging and was surprised to as how many I did not know. I would like to look further into the staging I did not know by watching examples of them in action to support my further studies.
We have discussed job roles and I would like to go for a financial manager role to explore the costs and understand responsibilities of running a small scaling production within budget as I may in the future want to explore this further professionally. The role of a financial manager will help me understand how costly it actually is to run this sort of project and therefore aid my future understanding. Other than this role I would have chosen a tour manager but I feel I have had slight existing experience in this role in previous touring-like projects and feel at this moment of time it would not influence my development as a performer as much as developing my understanding of the business in itself. I also believe I am skilled in handling and managing money so this would be an interesting role for me to experiment with.
Working with Leroy, we delved straight into choreography with the topic of drugs, this has been beneficial because it has creatively inspired us to create a performance to raise awareness of drugs we have also experimented with the role of gang violence surrounding drugs but as a cohort have decided we would like to stick to the addiction side of drugs. We created two movements first being on addiction and the second on gang violence. I personally fell in love with the addiction routine as I felt I adapted very well to this style of movement and felt a connection with the story straight away and I feel most of us felt the same as we all wanted to take this dance further. Below I have included the videos of our first routine.
On the Wednesday we researched into drugs, the effects of the drugs and characteristics we could embody to clearly portray each drug. After our research we developed a skeleton storyline (See picture below) Where we would have four storylines and four different drugs. But from further consideration we came to the conclusion that this would be a lot to cover in only 20 minutes of performing so as a group we have condensed this down and have chosen one drug and one storyline, which would be friends and the drug Flakka, I think this will give us the most opportunity to involve each character into a performance with purpose. The 7 plots have been useful to the development of this project because it helps us clearly outline a story without any confusion, the 7 plots consist of Overcoming the monster, Rags to riches, Quest, Voyage and return, comedy, Tragedy and rebirth. From my understanding of our topic and its intentions (to portray the disasters of drug taking.) rags to riches and comedy would not fit our storyline so I plan to go home and consider the remaining plots and chose one, then I will create a storyline in which we can move forward for next week.
For this week I will be researching into the role of a financial manager.
Financial Manager
A financial manager is responsible for providing financial guidance and support to clients and colleagues so they can make business decisions.
As a financial manager, you will need a good head for figures and for dealing with complex modelling and analysis, as well as a grasp of financial systems and procedures.
You may be employed in many different environments including both public and private sector organisations, such as:
Charities
Financial institutions
General businesses
Manufacturing companies
Multinational corporations
NHS trusts
Retailers
Universities.
Clear budgetary planning is essential for both the short and long term, and companies need to know the financial implications of any decision before proceeding.
In addition, care must be taken to ensure that financial practices are in line with all statutory legislation and regulations.
Financial managers may also be known as financial analysts or business analysts.
Responsibilities
The roles of financial managers can vary enormously. In larger companies for instance, the role is more concerned with strategic analysis, while in smaller organisations, a financial manager may be responsible for the collection and preparation of accounts.
In general, tasks across roles may include:
Providing and interpreting financial information
Monitoring and interpreting cash flows and predicting future trends
Analysing change and advising accordingly
Formulating strategic and long-term business plans
Researching and reporting on factors influencing business performance
Analysing competitors and market trends
Developing financial management mechanisms that minimise financial risk
Conducting reviews and evaluations for cost-reduction opportunities

Qualifications
Although this area of work is open to all graduates, the following subjects may be particularly helpful and may entitle you to exemptions from some professional examinations:

A relevant postgraduate course may be useful, but is not essential. In certain niche areas, specialised knowledge gained through a postgraduate programme may give you a competitive advantage. Graduate schemes in finance and related areas almost always require further study for professional qualifications. Search for postgraduate courses in financial management.
Entry into the profession is possible with A-levels (or equivalent) or an HND or HNC, generally by studying with an institutions such as the:

You can then proceed to professional accountancy training and work your way up to a management position.

Financial guidance - I will apply this within my project by looking into what we should be using our budget on and how to do this. I will be responsible of controlling our situation with money.
Business decision - I will use this skill by making all decisions based on the intentions of improving the project and ensuring we are making all the best decisions for the cohort.
A good head for figures and dealing with complex modelling and analysis - This will be important for the show as I will be strategically looking into how we will be using the budget we have.
Short termed long term - As this is a short term business I should be aware of the differences involved and how to apply my skills whether it be long term or short term.
Financial implications - I will need to be aware of any financial situations that may implicate the process of the show.
Collection and preparation of accounts - I will be holding and distributing the money for our budget so I will have to keep track what has been sent and who has given me money.
Interpreting financial information - It will be my responsibility to be prepared in financial situations in advance to relay the information I have to the group.
Analysing change and advising accordingly - If our situation is to change I should be prepared for alternatives or advise our options for example, if we will have to travel to a venue we did not plan to travel to I will have to ensure the fuel is paid for and any other costs that we may encounter will be covered.
Reporting on business performance - I will have to reflect on the business as a whole and make any relent changes I need to make.
Minimising financial risk - Ensure all venues are budget friendly and cost effective. For example if someone venue is a school but we are travelling outside of close range I will advise we travel to one closer as it is better for our budget.
Cost reduction opportunities - We will ensure all catering is sourced personally when shows are happening this reduces the expenses on the budget and only minimal amount of cars are used to transport us to and from venues.
Managing budgets - I will have to have knowledge in budgeting and different forms, once I have chosen one, I will ensure I stick to this method.
Arranging new sources of finance - If our situation requires me to source new income, I will discuss with the cohort my ideas for fundraising.
Communication - I will have to communicate within my group any queries and questions within our performance and I will also discuss with venues if necessary.
Analytical approach to work - Analyse all realistic outcomes and plan accordingly.
numeracy and technical skills - I will have to be good with money as I am handling money that belongs to a business.
Problem solving skills - helping within a cohort to address issues that may arise.
Ability to influence others - I may be faced with the situation that someones venue does not fit within the budget, this will mean I will have to be able to work with them to find a more cost effective way.
Ability to prioritise - Prioritising payments will be important such as petrol and parking tickets will be more prominent than reimbursement.
Work as part of a team - we will be working as a business cohort so it is essential that we all work together as a team to ensure we create the best performance we can.
Week commencing 23rd April
This week I have broadened my knowledge in Freytag's Pyramid my understanding of the sections of the storyline is Exposition - the background, setting, characters, setting the scene.
Inciting moment - something happens to begin the action.
Rising action - the story builds.
Climax - the point of greatest tension.
Falling action - events that happen as a result of the climax.
Resolution - the character solves the problem/conflict.
Denouement - The ending.
From learning about Freytag's Pyrimid I will be working with Natalie, Trya and Tiffani to create a 10 minute plot. I found it hard to involve Freytag's Pyramid because we had to introduce all characters in the exposition, this is different from what I am used to but I understand it is for clarity for the audience to have information on all characters. After looking into what theatre names have been used professionally before, we chose Morrigan Theatre, suggested by me. We split all our smaller job roles and I have chosen to work with budgeting and financial control systems as it is the most relevant to my job role, with this I will be managing all the cash flow and making informed decisions for enquires on what we can afford and what we cannot. To move forward within my production role I have researched into ideas on fundraising to present at our first company meeting. After this session it is apparent the importance of working as a team within a company similar to this as we all have a heavy work load but between us all we can delegate job roles to ensure we can manage the workload equally. It is clear that we all need to input and meet deadlines together otherwise the company as a whole will suffer as a result. I have noticed that some peoples job roles come into play straight away whereas others, we need to be more experienced into the project in order for our roles to be relevant. For example I need to know everyones venues in order to prepare for the cost of travelling and venue hire in advance.
As a group we researched into our chosen drug Flakka in more depth as before, we outlined the key characteristics of someone on Flakka by watching a video of someone on it. The keywords I used to describe someone on Flakka was; Alert, hyper, extreme agitation, bizarre behaviour, demonic and zombie like. These characteristics will help me develop my performance by influencing my type of movement.
Alertness and paranoia - Sharp movements.
Hyperactivity: Fast movements and levels.
Agitation: Facial expressions.
It would be beneficial to apply grotesque movements, extension and integration with each other to experiment in these movements.
After researching into Flakka more I am aware the symptoms they experience are: the feeling of being chased, delirium, hallucinations, fearlessness, lack of pain receptors, super strength, suicidal thoughts, depression, paranoia, animalistic tendencies and cannibalism.
I want to explore in movements such as; popping/locking, falling, contract and release, pulse movement, fast into slow, jolting, tense movements, ridged and aggressive movements. After our research we developed a movement off our knowledge (See video below)
As my chosen plot I have chosen Journey.
I think journey will show a persons fall into addiction, where they are curious about the drug and decide to take it and first of all it all seems fine and eurphoric but puzzling and unfamiliar which is what they've been searching for. Everything turns sour and they begin having bad trips and experiences but has gone to far and finds themselves not being able to walk away from the drug. They keep trying to free themselves from the drugs grips but they keep relapsing and having withdrawal symptoms, after a long journey fighting they are able to get away from the drug and start a new life.
We performed our plots we devised and me, Natalie, Tyra and Tiffani went first to present our plot and also experiment with forum theatre. I found this challenging but engaging I haven't experienced forum in this environment and I really enjoyed jumping straight into it. I found that it was hard to improvise from a command given by the audience, however I found it exciting as I did not know where the performance was going so it kept my character interpretation energised and on its toes. Without having to think about my next movement I was able to focus on that specific movement therefore giving my character a realistic reaction and I think that is a powerful feeling for an actor and every actor should explore this and test their abilities. It was also interesting to see how characters around me reacted to my improvisation. Some moments were harder, we found more uncomfortable pauses and blocks but I think this adds to the story if done right.
Week commencing 30th April
We have chosen our storyline and have decided to make Ryan the protagonist of our story and Lee-Ann our antagonist. The Protagonist (Ryan as Tony), is suffering with depression based on his ex-girlfiend (Tiffani as Louise) chasing drugs over their relationship. His current new girlfriend (Trya as Jess) is supportive and wants to help him through everything and wants to build a support network around him, she does this by inviting friends and family around first to arrive is his sister (Lucy as Kelly) who has a chip on her shoulder from their childhood, she thinks he's always been the favourite but loves him deep inside. Second to arrive is a friend of his sisters (Lee-Ann as Jamie) who is an antagonist, she pressures Tony into taking drugs to ignore his depression. Finally the neighbours arrive (Mikki and Natalie) who are neutral in the situation and want to get to know the neighbourhood after everyone is involved and argument kicks off when it is realised that the neighbours know Louise and Jamie is tired of Tony being dramatic and also confuses Jess for being Louise. Out of all the madness Tony calls out to Louise by leaving her a voicemail. He takes drugs from Jamie and it relieves the pain temporarily but when Louise turns up to the house and arguments break through again, Tony takes drugs from Jamie but it is Flakka,Throughout all of this the news reporter (Dan ad Ted Blakeson) is reporting violent acts of cannibalism. we later find out Is from the drug Flakka this will bring us to the climax where the audience will decide our next movements. In order to cast everyone we sat down and wrote a list of who we thought should play each character we then had a group discussion on our results.

I suggested this form of casting because I thought it would stop people from choosing a safe character, it gave people to push each other and test each others ability but also keeping in mind the typical character they play and their strengths. This approach to casting took longer than I initially thought however, it was interesting to see how people reacted to who people thought they should play. Some people became nervous that they would have to play a different role to which they were used too but we all worked together as a team to assure them why we think they should go for it. Some people seemed to be more concentrated on the protagonist and antagonist role, rather than the role within itself. I have learnt from this project so far that all roles are equally important in this project as majority of the acting will be through forum, where we all have an equal role to play, this fact does not seem to be understood by everyone. I think the group as a whole have an obsession for main roles, this is something we will have to overcome to move forward within this project and I will suggest that we all have our moments within the performance to even the characters out.
This week I emailed Youth Enfield
My target for next week is to research into how people take Flakka and why people take it, I feel like this is important to know this information because it would provide reasons to why are characters have it and/or take it. I would also like to watch some youtube videos on work from Hofesh and Butoh to influence and inspire my movement devised by Leroy.
We had our first company meeting where we outlined all availabilities I can perform on any week day at anytime but I cannot book off weekends from work and after everyone else's availabilities we condensed those days down. I put forward the idea of fundraising but people would rather all input £10 into a budget which would give us a budget of £120 as a whole so as the financial manager I have decided to wait to give people a deadline to pay this money so they have the opportunity to speak to me if they cannot input the £10.
Friday we had a workshop with the technicians to learn how to set up the lights before our performances.
Venue update: I have heard nothing form Youth Enfield but I have found the email and phone number for Linda Crawford who is the leading body of units around north London.
Week commencing 7th May
What is Flakka? Flakka is a potent, highly addictive stimulant drug. In a small amount the drug provides euphoria, stimulation, and hallucinations. However, just a little bit more can trigger heart problems, agitation, aggressiveness, psychosis, paranoia and excited delirium. Flakka is a more potent form of what was previously known as “bath salts.” It also goes by the name of gravel.
What does Flakka look like? Its similar in appearance to rock candy, it is crystalline like bath salts and crystal meth.
How is it used? Flakka is being consumed various ways, such as in joints, injected, or snorted. It also is being put into vapes, or e-cigarettes, as a way to hide the obvious drug use. A large portion of the general population use vapes legally with nicotine and other legal chemicals, which allows drug users to hide amongst the crowd while using.
How does the body react to Flakka? Excited delirium, characterized by hyperthermia, where the body temperature increases to more than 105 degrees, and paranoia causes users to run wild. Flakka can cause individuals to believe that they are being chased or are on fire, causing them to act violently with adrenaline-heightened strength, sometimes requiring 4 to 5 law enforcement officers to restrain them. Once restrained immediate emergency medical attention is required.
In the beginning of the week the whole show was blocked this was surprisingly easy to do and we got it done all in the morning session of Tuesday, we spent our session with Leroy going over our scenes which he then gave us feedback for.
We as a team need to work on remembering each others character names when performing to introduce them into the performance and to not shout and talk over each other as it is too much to focus on. We also filled Tyra in on the movements we had been working on with Leroy as she missed the morning and we then changed the routine to fit around Ryan as he will be the one taking drugs.
I persoanlly liked the first movement we did with Leroy more than this one as I feel it captured the aim of the dance. The Flakka dance in my opinion is week at the moment because not all participants are giving their best embodiment of Flakka just yet so I think people need to research into the movement and characteristics more. Personally I feel like I should be experimenting with levels more, I should freely move with extensions and grotesque embodiment to move forward in these dances. When we began this Flakka dance I was holding back from the movement because it just didn't feel right but now I know that that means I'm doing it right the more it feels wrong, so I will continue working on this. I have set the deadline to hand in the £10 on the next Friday.
I have left Lisa Crawford a message on her answering machine today explaining to her what our show was and what we aim to do so I am waiting for a call back from her. After this we decided as a group to name our show 'One bad decision.'
We have been running the full performance and trying to amend any problems but as a group (myself included) there was a sour mood across the cohort, I think this is because of the lack of commitment some people were bringing to their character. It is vital that we all team together to create a positive environment for our project to move forward so I and others ran the scenes we thought needed the most work applying constructive feedback to those who were not committed, but no no avail the show was not working with the plot or characters within it. So to fix this we all decided we would create a whole new storyline. On the Friday we plotted the whole new show. Ready to work on next week, we had already blocked the first two scenes which was already an improvement. I think as a group what let us down was the storyline wasn't giving us much to work from apart form lines. I think we needed to add more scene changes and more advance characters. I wasn't happy with my character entirely because I thought it would be a character I would take anywhere but from rehearsals I realised that a neutral character in this environment was holding me back as I had no connections to other characters Lee-ann's antagonist role became more comedic, so we were losing our story as a whole.
Week commencing 14th May
We blocked out our new show on the Tuesday I have become the counsellor. I think this is a good role for me to play to my strengths as I seem to adapt to an authoritative role quite easily and I think the show has enough 'Friend' like characters. So I think this will give the performance a different aspect. I also think this is a good idea to allow this space to be a point in the show where we can reflect and recap for the audience what will happen. Because this is a role I can't take into the forum, me and Tiffani have decided to learn each others roles to swap and alternate shows so we both can experience the forum. Tiffani now plays the girlfriend of Ryan, Natalie is now the antagonist, Dan is an interviewer, Lucy is still playing the sister and Lee-ann is a friend still. I am impressed with this show, it has a new feeling to it and I feel more comfortable in my role.
in the session we have with Leroy we blocked the dance again around Trya as the focus point because she will be the one taking Flakka.
We had a full run and I have noticed that we have two weapons whilst in the forum the flakka and a knife this may cause a problem because the audience members would be more focused on the weapons rather than resolving the problem, this will have to be something we workshop as a group. Some people are struggling with the idea of improvisation, but I am really interested in how it will work out. I am excited that we will never perform the same show twice and I can't wait to tour this piece. One Tuesday I managed to get a call back from Lisa Crawford, she is very interested to have us tour our performance to one of her venues. I explained to her what the show was about and how it will be beneficial to her cohort and she said she would like to gather an audience for me and book us once she has a venue free.
Wednesday we had our Stanford Meisner workshop and this was my favourite, it taught me how to be in the space when performing. The ball of power helped me massively when improvising, I now understand my question to speak within the forum space. I have also worked on introducing myself to audience members appropriately and we decided to take the knife out of the forum. I think I could improve on making sure I am aware of what my objective and super objective at all times is, I think there is still room for improvement where I could embody my character more. We ran the forum with Tiffani as the girlfriend and me as the counsellor. some people are struggling with how long they have to discuss the objectives the audience members have given them within 10 seconds and this is causing stress across the cohort. I have noticed when someone doesn't understand something the whole production gets stopped in its tracks to go over something again, we need to improve on this as a group and to understand we have to trial and error. When we run the whole show and the forum with me as the girlfriend I struggled with my super objectives and lines because I have focused more on the role as a counsellor so I will have to work on practicing my alternative character in order to perform it as strong as my counsellor character.
To move forward in my production role I have researched into different types of budgeting:
Master Budget A master budget is an aggregate of a company's individual budgets designed to present a complete picture of its financial activity and health. The master budget combines factors like sales, operating expenses, assets, and income streams to allow companies to establish goals and evaluate their overall performance, as well as that of individual cost centers within the organization. Master budgets are often used in larger companies to keep all individual managers aligned.
Operating Budget An operating budget is a forecast and analysis of projected income and expenses over the course of a specified time period. To create an accurate picture, operating budgets must account for factors such as sales, production, labor costs, materials costs, overhead, manufacturing costs, and administrative expenses. Operating budgets are generally created on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis. A manager might compare these reports month after month to see if a company is overspending on supplies.
Cash Flow Budget A cash flow budget is a means of projecting how and when cash comes in and flows out of a business within a specified time period. It can be useful in helping a company determine whether it's managing its cash wisely. Cash flow budgets consider factors such as accounts payable and accounts receivable to assess whether a company has ample cash on hand to continue operating, the extent to which it is using its cash productively, and its likelihood of generating cash in the near future. A construction company, for example, might use its cash flow budget to determine whether it can start a new building project before getting paid for the work it has in progress.
Financial Budget A financial budget presents a company's strategy for managing its assets, cash flow, income, and expenses. A financial budget is used to establish a picture of a company's financial health and present a comprehensive overview of its spending relative to revenues from core operations. A software company, for instance, might use its financial budget to determine its value in the context of a public stock offering or merger.
Static Budget A static budget is a fixed budget that remains unaltered regardless of changes in factors such as sales volume or revenue. A plumbing supply company, for example, might have a static budget in place each year for warehousing and storage, regardless of how much inventory it moves in and out due to increased or decreased sales.
Week commencing 21st May
Our first show fell on the Monday, I played as the counsellor and Tiffani played as the girlfriend. Overall the acting at the beginning of the show up until the forum because we had practiced it throughout. when it came to the forum I moved around audience members to ensure the directions they were giving where playable. It was quickly apparent that the drug being in the forum influenced the audience to use it as a weapon. Projection could have been better but overall the forum became a scene where everyone became on Flakka or pregnant. As a group people where running to use their objectives which made the scenes move faster and that made our overall show only 50 minutes long. It is apparent we need to work on developing our skills in the forum, removing the drug and after our feedback from the audience members we need to work on our exposition better because they didn't really understand the importance of each character. After a debrief concluding our thoughts and feelings on the show we have decided to bring the counsellor into the forum, giving us five members in the forum space, but to do this my character needs to have a connection with other characters so we have made it aware that my character not only has past relationships with Ryan's character and his sister, I am now involved with the antagonist herself, this provides a backstory to my character and theirs and pushes the counsellor scene to being more clear and a point of clarity.
We arranged a new script to push our characters exposition. I was made aware straight away that I have quite a long monologue which was daunting because I am worried I don't have enough time to learn my lines. We have decided to bring in a new movement into the performance to present the movement of time. This scene will represent our protagonist Arron travelling round being turned away from interviews. This scene will be important because it will represent Arron's spiral into desperation which will then feed into why he turns to a counsellor for support. Devising the clockwork scene was difficult, a lot of us including myself struggled with timing, but as a result of that the energy within the cohort went downhill as members of the group became frustrated and vocal. I do think as a team we need to be more understanding and supportive in order for this to move forward. to move forward I will work on my timings and ensure I am aware of what I am doing rather than what is happening around me because that is where I get thrown off because I'm comparing myself throughout.
I have now received the £10 from moat of the cohort and have reimbursed Lucy for her payment on the masks and the cost of the flyers advertising our show. I have researched into the 50/30/20 Budgeting system, by using 50% of our budget on necessities such as props, costumes and travelling. 30% of the budget on catering and things for the show that may not be as necessary and 20% should be kept in case of emergency.
I have looked into works of butoh and Hofesh to inspire and influence my movement, these movements have interested me because of the techniques they use. I am most drawn to the ridged movements and the fast and slow paced diversity. I want to apply this to my work to demonstrate the movement flakka has on victims.
Week commencing 28th May
We have had little time after last weeks amendments to refine and polish and this was a downfall on my side also because I hadn't learnt my lines. To prepare myself for the show in the evening I have decided to condense my lines down and have used my laptop to prompt myself of case studies I would need to. This took the pressure off my line learning and have interpreted it into the scene and made it part of the performance.The clockwork scene was held off for this evenings performance because it still needed work. Throughout this rehearsal we were worried and to add to that stress we had various audiences and members cancel on us which made it so our audience capacity was 7 members at a push if we were able to have bar staff from the vine view it also. so we decided that we would script our ending and not perform the forum because there would be too little audience members to participate. The show itself was better than we had anticipated the acting pulled everything together and from audience reviews we found that many people liked the counsellor scene and the job interview. next performance I think we should spend time working on the clockwork scene because this was a great movement that just needed polishing so I plan to encourage my cohort next week and ensure we are working productively. Overall this project has been an eye opener for me. I have enjoyed it and found stressful situations however as a performance this identifies similar to the line of work I want to do in the sense that it is to raise awareness and involve audience members to convince them that drug taking is not the way. My audience will be students from correctional units which means we will have the opportunity to influence their mindset in drug taking which I think is so important to the style of this performance. If I was to do this project again I would like to experiment in different areas by exploring other storylines surrounding violence and family. contributing to the production with my job role of a financial manager has been a slow but important role. I think I would have had more contributions towards the show if I had the job role of sourcing relevant charities and managing social medias, however I have broadened my knowledge in the costs of running a small scale production. gIVEN The chance to redo this project I would challenge myself to take on the role of a tour manager because given my previous experience in this role I think I could have developed my experience further and also broadened my knowledge in the costs by communication with the financial manager. Also throughout my time on this project I have kept up to date by completing all my blogs per week handwritten and have consistantly advised new options when faced with drawbacks within the project.
